Amanda Serrano Battles To Victory
Amanda Serrano added another milestone to her Hall of Fame career Friday night, defeating Lucrecia Manzur by majority decision at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California.
Serrano retained her WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine featherweight titles with scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 114-114, improving her record to 50-4-1. The victory marked the 50th win of Serrano’s professional career, although it didn’t come as easily as many expected.
Manzur came to fight and consistently pressured Serrano throughout the 12-round championship bout. Serrano found success with her body attack and counterpunching, particularly as the fight progressed, but Manzur remained competitive and gave the longtime champion one of the tougher nights of her recent career.
Serrano entered the bout looking for her 33rd career knockout, which would have moved her past Christy Martin for the outright women’s boxing knockout record. Instead, she was forced to go the distance but walked away with her titles and career victory No. 50.
The undercard also produced several notable results. Melissa Mortensen captured the vacant WBA super bantamweight championship, overcoming a second-round knockdown to defeat Mayelli Flores by split decision, 95-94, 95-94 and 94-95.
U.S. Olympian Jahmal Harvey improved to 4-0 with an impressive second-round knockout of Hammet Keb, while Avious Griffin stopped Jackson Marinez after dropping him twice in the fifth round, with Marinez’s corner ending the fight before the start of the sixth. (MOST VALUABLE PROMOTIONS)
